The price is right, the container has a premium color pattern, and the canopy looks crisp. But then you look closely at the details and notice: "AAD: Cypres 2, manufactured in 2014."

Before you wire your hard-earned money, you need to ask yourself one critical, technical question: how much aad lifespan does that unit actually have left, and what is it going to cost you in maintenance and battery swaps over the next few years?

An Automatic Activation Device (AAD) is your last line of defense. If you suffer a high-speed double-malfunction, lose consciousness due to a canopy collision, or lose track of altitude in freefall, the AAD cuts your reserve closing loop automatically using a pyrotechnic cutter, deploying your reserve canopy just feet before impact.

But these are highly sensitive, military-grade micro-computers. Because they carry such a massive safety responsibility, manufacturers place strict expiration dates and service limits on every unit. Buying a cheap, used AAD that only has 12 months left before it must legally be retired is not a bargain—it is a financial trap.

2. Vigil (Vigil II, II+, Cuatro): The "No Maintenance" Philosophy

Manufactured by A.A.D. nv/sa in Belgium, Vigil entered the market as a direct competitor to Cypres, positioning itself on a completely opposite philosophy: maximum lifespan and zero mandatory trips back to the factory.

The 20-Year Lifespan

The unit continuously runs self-diagnostics every time you turn it on. If it passes its internal startup checks, it is deemed airworthy by the manufacturer.

The Battery Catch

Just because you do not have to send a Vigil to the factory does not mean it is free to run forever. Vigil units run on a specialized lithium battery pack.
